Birthday cake for outdoorsman
I made this cake for my dad's birthday. He loves to hunt and fish, and I wanted to try my hand at gum paste figures. I need lots more practice, but I was pretty pleased with the first attempt (Josh had to help me - he's a great play dough sculptor. Jack always wants him to play play dough with him instead of me!). I wanted to do camo fondant somewhere on the cake but couldn't get it to work right. The dirt is supposed to resemble Georgia red mud.
I made the deer, fish, hunter's head, and trees, and Josh made the ducks and the hunter's body. Because I didn't know how I wanted to color the hunter, we sculpted him in white gum paste and then painted him with gel food color. I wouldn't do that again - next time I'll tint first! The gel never dries and is sticky, plus it's shiny and is out of place on the rest of the cake.
The fish and the trees are my favorites! The trees are sugar cones covered in green royal icing using a leaf tip (can't take credit for the idea, found it on the internet). The fish is painted gum paste instead of tinted, but on a small surface (and for the scaly effect) it worked fine. Mom had the idea for the water rings around him (brilliant!).

Cake #5 was supposed to have a fondant bow with fondant flowers, but in the spirit of Christmas, I decided to do a Christmas lights cake (I'll tackle the bow later). Red velvet cake with almond fondant and fondant and gel decorations.
Apple Blackberry Pie
An apple blackberry pie with pate brisee crust cut in the shape of fall leaves. Made with honey granules instead of sugar.

Wilton class cake #4
This is the cake from Wilton course 2, again in two color ways. Vanilla cake with almond buttercream and royal icing flowers; vanilla cake with chocolate almond buttercream and royal flowers.
This is Mom's final cake for course 2. Vanilla buttercream with vanilla & almond buttercream with royal icing flowers.
Fall leaf cookies
Maple and oak leaf sugar cookies with royal icing. The cookies are made with honey granules instead of sugar. The brown leaves have orange flavored icing, the red leaves have vanilla flavored icing, and the orange leaves have almond flavored icing. I used a toothpick to drag contrasting colors into patterns on some of the leaves. On others, I used one solid color and sprinkled raw sugar on top, which soaked up the color in the icing.

Wilton class cake #2
Second cake for Wilton course 1. It was Halloween, so I chose orange and black. Vanilla cake with chocolate-orange-almond and orange-almond buttercream.
Mom's clown cake. I love how her clowns are striped!
